Our Projects

Our society engages in projects that promote the long-term conservation, ecological integrity, and water quality of Seymour Lake and its watershed (located near Smithers, British Columbia).

Water Quality Monitoring

In the Spring of 2025, the Seymour Lake Society partnered with the BC Lake Stewardship Society (BCLSS) and began taking water quality measurements on Seymour Lake.  Each Fall, we send our data to the BCLSS.  After three years, the BCLSS will analyze our data and create a report that will help us to determine what actions we should take in order to improve the water quality and ecology of Seymour Lake.  We also do testing for the Water Rangers program.

Water Level Monitoring

In April of 2023, the SLCS installed a water level monitoring system.  This system consists of a water level measuring stick and an electronic pressure gauge.  These tools allow us to gather data so that, over time, we can gain an understanding of how the water level in Seymour Lake is changing.  This project was made possible thanks to the Wetzin'kwa community grant program. Algae Monitoring

Our algae monitoring project began in October of 2024, when Seymour Lake experienced a large cyanobacteria bloom (also known as blue-Green algae).  Our society partnered with Northern Health by mapping the changes in the bloom, by helping with notifying the public, and by reaching out to alert other government agencies. In order to reduce the risk of future blooms, we are consulting with a variety of experts so that we can take actions that will reduce the likelihood of large cyanobacteria blooms. The photo on the left shows the amount of algae in Seymour Lake on Sept. 4, 2024.  At present, this amount is too low to report to Algae Watch. We are monitoring the algae fluctuations regularly.

Educational Outreach

We run educational experiences for school groups.  The photo on the right shows one of our members giving the "Wonderful World of Beavers" tour.
